Haisla Community School

Contact Information:

Haisla Community School (HCS) is an elementary school in Kitamaat Village that blends modern education with Haisla traditions. In partnership with families and the community, HCS fosters each child’s academic growth and lifelong love of learning.

We welcome students from full-day kindergarten to Grade 7, both Haisla and non-Haisla, with bus service from Kitimat. A strong Haisla language and culture program includes Elder involvement and a dedicated in-house language teacher, enriching the curriculum across all subjects.

Classrooms are equipped with iPads for each student and Smart Boards to support interactive learning. Our school provides a collaborative, supportive atmosphere where children feel cared for and inspired to succeed.

All interested students are welcome to apply.  Students do not have to be Haisla or Indigenous. If you would like to register your child, the document can be found here HCS Registration form. Please download, complete the form and submit via email.

A strong Haisla language and culture program enriches the curriculum across all subjects.

Our vision is to nurture students holistically through a cultural lens to be confident, resilient and independent lifelong learners. We believe in ga wa tlaap (helping hands), wa sem key nulth (warm heart), aiks nu wa ka (good mind) and aiks wa lth dem (kind words).

Did you Know?

Haisla Community School is proud to be implementing Jump Math in our classrooms—a transformative, research-based program that nurtures both confidence and concept mastery in mathematics.

Jump Math helps students:

  • Spark curiosity through interactive lessons
  • Build confidence with step-by-step learning
  • Achieve mastery through guided discovery
  • Feel included and capable, no matter their starting point

Jump Math is more than just numbers—it’s about relationships, respect, and reconciliation.

“Jump Math is committed to supporting the math learning needs of Indigenous children and is on a journey to better understand how our organization can play a meaningful role in ‘honouring the treaty relationship’ and implementing the Commission’s recommendations.”

Jump Math’s goal is to ensure its teaching approach reflects the presence of Indigenous peoples and the contributions of Indigenous knowledge.

Dr. Pamela Rose Toulouse (EdCan, 2018)

In 2020 alone:

  • Over 11,500 students and hundreds of teachers received Jump Math support
  • Copyright was waived on Indigenous translations of Jump Math materials
  • Translation agreements were made with Indigenous communities across Canada

These steps reflect a growing commitment to Truth & Reconciliation in math education—building supportive and trusting relationships with Indigenous peoples is essential to this journey.
