FROM: Haisla Nation Elected Chief and Council
DATE: June 04, 2025
SUBJECT: General Election – Respectful Conduct Reminder

The Haisla Nation’s general election process is currently underway. We encourage all members to stay engaged and informed as we move through this important democratic process.

As with any election, there may be differing views and opinions on candidates and their platforms. However, as your elected Council, we want to remind everyone that we must uphold respect and integrity throughout the election period.

We do not support or condone any form of smear campaigns, personal attacks, or the spreading of misinformation. These types of behaviours can be harmful—not only to candidates—but to our entire membership. Certain rumours or statements, if unfounded or false, can cause significant damage to reputations and create unnecessary division among our people.
We ask all members to:

  • Engage in respectful discussion and debate
  • Verify information before sharing it
  • Report any concerning behaviour to the appropriate authority (e.g., Electoral Officer)
  • Support a fair and transparent process for all candidates

We are committed to continuing to build a community grounded in respect, unity, and accountability. We all share the responsibility of ensuring a safe, constructive, and inclusive election process.
If you have questions about the election process, or would like to report a suspected election offence, please contact One Feather, Electoral Officer, Brett Bilyk at brett@onefeather.ca or 1-855-923-3006.

The Preliminary Candidates List has been received from OneFeather and is being shared with Haisla Membership.

An updated list will be shared at a later date when the Final Candidates List is confirmed.

------

Necessary care of our assets at the BC Works smelter may, at times, require planned and unplanned maintenance, which may require a Bypass or an Upset in our emission control devices.

Planned bypass of emission control devices are scheduled at the Fume Treatment Centre (FTC) on 03 June 2025.

Details:

Emission Control Device: Fume Treatment Centre (FTC)

Date: June 3rd, 2025

Duration: 10 hours

Reason for upset: Routine Maintenance (Plenum Cleaning)

Emissions typically treated under normal conditions: Particulates, fluorides, Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAH)

A planned bypass is an event that must be approved by the Ministry of Environment and Climate Change Strategy prior to commencing. Bypass happens when emission control devices have built-in bypass pathways that allow the equipment to pass emissions without treatment. These pathways are designed to protect the integrity of the asset in case of any issue.

Each week, we gather job opportunities in the region to support Haisla Members in finding meaningful employment. For full job descriptions or help applying, contact our Employment & Training Coordinator at employment@haisla.ca.
