Building a Membership Law that Reflects Who We Are
The Haisla Nation is undertaking an important community‑driven process to update the Membership Law, originally created in 1987. Much has changed in our families, our Nation, and the broader world, and it is time to ensure our law reflects our identity, our values, and our future as x̄á’isla people.
This project is rooted in transparency, member guidance, and long‑term vision. Your voice is vital; your experiences and stories will shape the law that protects our governance, culture, and future generations.
What Is the Membership Project?
The Membership Project is a Nation‑wide initiative to review and update the 1987 Membership Law. Its purpose is to make sure our rules about membership continue to support our membership’s goals around identity, belonging, governance, and access to programs and services.
Why It Matters
The Membership Law influences:
- Who is formally recognized as a Haisla Nation member
- Access to services, programs, and member supports
- Governance, voting rights, and Nation decision‑making
- The preservation of culture, identity, and belonging across generations
