Custom Election Code

The Haisla Nation Custom Election Code outlines the rules and procedures for electing the Chief Councillor and Councillors of the Haisla Nation. This code was approved by referendum on December 18, 2020, and certified on January 6, 2021, officially replacing the election provisions under the Indian Act.

Developed with the values of transparency, accountability, and self-governance in mind, this Code provides comprehensive guidance on:
  • Election timelines and procedures
  • Roles and responsibilities of candidates and electoral officials
  • Voter eligibility and voting options (including mail-in and electronic voting)
  • Nomination processes and campaigning rules
  • Terms of office and procedures for by-elections
  • Removal from office, ethics standards, and appeals mechanisms
