In April 2024, two important projects will commence. Kailee Gardiner, Deputy CAO - Development, has provided a detailed update to the Haisla Membership regarding these projects.

While the curbside collection date for Recycling and Food waste falls on a Statutory holiday, Monday, April 1, 2024, collection will still continue as scheduled.

Ensure the rigid blue bin and tall green bin are placed at the curb by 8 am, as the collection will begin shortly after. Keep in mind that only one collection round will be conducted.

Helpful tips to keep in mind:

  • Blue rigid bins (Recycling):
    • Items for recycling should be empty, rinsed, and placed loosely inside the bin.
  • Tall green bin (Compost):
    • Food waste can be placed in a compostable bag or directly inside the tall green bin.
  • Note that the "kitchen catcher" for food waste and the vinyl "indoor recycling organizers" are not for curbside use; they are intended for indoor sorting purposes only.

We acknowledge that change can be challenging. It's inspiring to witness households embracing this change to help do their part to lessen waste at our community landfill, cut down carbon emissions, and promote a healthier, happier planet for all.

Updates pertaining to Patient Travel will come into effect April 1, 2024. Updates will be in the areas of:

  • Escort coverage
  • Private accommodation rates
  • Hospital parking supports
  • Extension to the temporary mileage rates

With the newly launched Curbside Recycling Program in place, the HNC Environment department is excited to provide valuable resources from Recycle BC.

Here are their "Bin Signage" and "Green Food Bin" information sheets, providing visuals to guide homeowners in their recycling efforts. We encourage homeowners to save as a helpful resource.

Additionally, Recycle BC offers a "Recycling Home Tour" on their website, taking you through each room to pinpoint recycling possibilities. Click the following link to explore further: "Recycling Home Tour."

March is Distracted Driving awareness month and we all play a role in making our roads safe.

Distracted Driving is the leading cause of crashes and injuries. If everyone avoided distractions while driving in BC, around 78 lives could be saved every year.

When it comes to driving:

-Don’t use your cellphone at a red light. The law applies even when you are stopped at a red light or in bumper-to-bumper traffic;

-Keep your hands free. Hands-free means a Bluetooth, wired headset or speakerphone that can be operated with one touch or voice commands;

-If you have a Learner’s (L) or Novice  licence, you are not allowed to use any electronic devices (like phone or GPS) behind the wheel, for any purpose, even in hands-free mode.

Every Distracted Driving ticket includes a fine of $368 and four driver penalty points.

Plan ahead to keep your focus on the road:

-Turn off your phone or notifications. Consider turning on “silent mode” or “do not disturb” when you first get into the car.

-Keep you phone out of sight and out of mind. Put it in a closed glove box or centre console before you start driving.

-Know where to go before you drive. Program your GPS before you start driving and pull over if you need to update directions.

-Driving will always require your full attention, so set yourself up for zero distractions before you start driving.

-Set realistic travel times and be mindful of rush hours and delays.

When you’re behind the wheel, please focus on the road. Police across BC will be ramping up enforcement to help keep us all safe.

In preparation of the upcoming Curbside Collection Program starting on March 11, 2024, the HNC Environment department delivered the following to each household in Kitamaat Village along with a 2024 Recycle Pick Up Calendar:

1 x “Green bin” 57 L food waste container for curb side use.

1 x “Kitchen catcher” for food waste for indoor use.

1 x “Blue bin” 121 L for recycling (includes lid) for curb side use.

4 x “indoor recycling organizers” vinyl plastic organizers for indoor use.

1 x “Garbage bin” 121 L for garbage (includes lid) for curb side use.

Since the delivery of the bins, the calendar has been *REVISED*. Please recycle the calendar that was delivered with the bins.

The March 11, 2024 collection date will be for garbage and compost (Food waste).
