Are you passionate about your community? Do you have ideas for projects that could make a real difference here at home?

Simon Fraser University’s Community Capacity Building Certificate is a free program designed for community leaders of all kinds. You might be a quiet supporter who is always there to help move things forward. You might be inspiring and charismatic, or maybe you are still searching for your own inspiration. Wherever you are on your journey, this program is a chance to learn, grow and create positive change in your community.

Through the program, participants build deeper relationships with themselves, their communities and the land, discover new tools, and plan and carry out real projects that will have a lasting impact.

What You Will Gain

  • Learn in creative and art based ways, with the support of a class Elder
  • Become a more effective leader
  • Plan and carry out a project that will serve your community
  • Gain hands on experience you can highlight in a résumé, portfolio or school application

  • Runs February to July 2026 (exact schedule to be confirmed)
  • Delivered in person and online via Zoom
  • Spaces are limited
  • Completely free

Pre Requisites

  • Who Can Apply

    To take part, you must:

    • Be able to commit to 6 hours per week of class time, plus individual learning time
    • Be unemployed, or employed part time, seasonally, casually or precariously
    • Be at least 16 years old
    • Have a Social Insurance Number (SIN)
    • Be interested in creating and carrying out community projects
