Haisla Nation Council [HNC] has made the decision to close all of its offices in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The closure will begin Monday, March 23 and last for two weeks. At that time leadership will reassess whether to re-open.
“With such a rapidly developing situation, we need to protect our community and staff, and we hope to achieve that with this latest decision,” says Chief Councillor Crystal Smith.
HNC offices had already closed to the public, and now only essential services in the community will continue.
Those essential services are Public Works, the Gas Bar, and Haisla Health whose representatives will continue any work as needed.
The post office in Kitamaat Village will follow the lead of Canada Post for its operations, and as of now mail is still available for pick-up from its post office boxes.
HNC will also defer social housing payments from the community during the closure of offices.
“In the meanwhile, I urge our community members to continue practicing safe social distances, limiting your contact with others, and follow any advice from provincial and federal health authorities,” adds Smith.
