Every person serving as a Master (Captain) of a Canadian Fishing Vessel is required, under the Canada Shipping Act 2001 - Canadian Personnel Regulations, to hold a Fishing Master Certificate of Competency. Certificate of Service, as Master of the Fishing Vessel, under 60 Gross Tonnages.

This certificate has a "sunset" clause and will only be available for approximately seven years from 2007.  The hold of this certificate may act as Master on board a fishing vessel of not more than 60 gross tonnage engaged on an unlimited, a near coastal, Class 1 or 2 or a sheltered waters voyage, according to the voyages on which the qualifying service for the certificate has been acquired.  The validity will be specified on the certificate.
